I recently was a member of a panel for a new hire orientation at the company where I am employed. They started off asking a question about what I liked to do. I quickly responded that I liked so take photographs and bicycle.
I didn’t think much of it at that time. Just a question among many others that day. It was a few days later when I started a book, How to Raise a Wild Child: The Art and Science of Falling in Love with Nature by Scott Sampson. (You may know Sampson from PBS. He is the host for Dinosaur Train.) In the book, Sampson talks of the disconnect between kids and nature. He urges kids to “Get outside, get into nature, and make your own discoveries!”
A third event then happened when a friend asked me “what do you like to do?” This made me think more because of the above incidents. At first I started to give the same answer asked in the orientation, but quickly realized that the answer really is “get outdoors”.
I like being outdoors. I like seeing nature. I love to record it with my photographs. When I ride, I like seeing the fields of nature around me. There is something calming about being in the presence of nature. I like it.
Now, how much do I get out? Not nearly enough. But these incidents have made me think about that. I plan on more outdoor time- more time to photograph and more time to ride.
Why don’t you join me? Get outside, get into nature, and make your own discoveries!
